A furry addition to the engagement session

Peanut joins the engagement session

Jody & Brandon came up to visit with the adorable, fluffy Peanut in tow. I like babies, I like cake, I like spring days and long walks in the rain…but if you really want to make my day, put a dog in front of me.

Peanut was amazing! Wasn’t afraid of the big lens, jumped right up and said hi. She then proceeded to herd the geese. Yes, all fifty or so of them, almost bigger than she was. An explosive burst of energy, a glimpse of fur and off she went. Granted, it did take ten minutes and an SUV to wrangle her back, but impressive? Oh yes!

Even more impressive was Jody & Brandon themselves. I did a tiny bit of coaching, then just stood the heck back and captured what I saw. I love that within five minutes, it was as if the camera wasn’t there!

Here are a few from the session. Enjoy!

Walking to Troy's designated "kneel" spot, time to go, 4 minutes

Walking to Troy's designated "kneel" spot, time to go, 4 minutes

I love to think of myself as a storyteller first, with photography being my favorite way to weave a story.  So when Troy contacted us with a unique idea, I jumped all over it!

Troy had decided he was ready to propose to his girlfriend.  He had contacted a hotel in Half Moon Bay, was given advice as to where the best spots would be to ask for her hand, had the ring…all he needed was a photographer.

Was so afraid that Christie would notice me shooting this! It was as close as I dared get.

Was so afraid that Christie would notice me shooting this! It was as close as I dared get.

Wait, what?  YES!  I wish more guys would think about asking a photographer to be present for their proposal.  In fact, after Troy contacted us and asked us if we would be there for his, we started to ask around to all our married guy friends and family.  “If you knew you could have hired a photographer to capture you popping the question, would you?”  Every single one said YES!

Did she say yes? Did she say yes?

Did she say yes? Did she say yes?

So Troy in my opinion was a brilliant, thoughtful, romantic guy to even think about having us photograph his proposal.  But then he took it one step further.  He wanted to be sure his girlfriend would not even notice I was there, so that he could give her an enlargement of that special moment as a Christmas present.  This guy was amazing!

We get the permits and permissions, set 4:25 as the “kneel” time, synch our watches, exchanged cell phone for texting last minute messages..and I blatantly start photographing anything I can see.  I’ve got a tripod and a long lens.  Out in full view.  Why?  Because there was no place to hide!  Earlier,  I brainstormed with Troy and said, “Point me out to Christie as soon as you two see me.  Ask “what do you think she’s doing?  Hey, maybe she’s with the hotel…” Then, you get who I am and what I may be doing out of the way instead of me being the white elephant in the room!”  He agreed!

She sure did! Congrats Troy & Christie!

She sure did! Congrats Troy & Christie!

You could not have asked for a better sunset sky, and given that it was the end of December, someone up there had their eye on Troy, that’s for sure!  She indeed said yes, and they continued to watch the sunset together.  Beautiful.

I’m so honored that I was there to capture it for them – and I hope I’m there when the big day comes, too!

Guys, repeat after me – get the ring, get the photographer, then take a deep breath…and do it!  To book us as your proposal-azzi, call Brooke at 408-369-1783. Happy Valentine’s Day!!!!!!

Not five minutes after she said yes, the sky exploded in reds and pinks and oranges!

Not five minutes after she said yes, the sky exploded in reds and pinks and oranges!

PS, please, don’t ask me where these images were taken.  The hotel had given us permission and suggested locations, but unfortunately, that suggested location was not on hotel property.  It was just an oversight, not intentional, on the part of the hotel employee.  So to protect both properties, and the poor lady who was just trying to help, I’m afraid I can’t give out the name of the location.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk means so much to me, and it’s not just the crazy collection of humanity that roams the sidewalk.  I love the colors, the bits of cheesiness combined with posters proclaiming the best bands from the 80s will be performing right there on the beach and can ya believe it?  Just watching the people come and go is worth a trip for me, and I soaked it up while I waited for Brandon & Marissa near the carousel.  They’d already warned me they’d be a little late – they couldn’t bring their dog with them so had to drive ALL the way back up the 17 and then all the way back down, and during rush hour.  Poor things!  But one thing we had going for us – this particular afternoon was saturated blue sky, a bit of a breeze and tons of characters watching our every move.

The first thing that strikes you when you see them is, well, that these are two of the most beautiful people, ever.  No really!  You may even be tempted to be grumpy at their beautiful-ness.  Until you get to know them.  So down to earth, so full of fun, and completely bonkers about each other.

First, the “serious” ones, with Brandon in a crisp white embroidered shirt and Marissa looking like the cover of the latest hit CD.

So then, they get changed into what they thought was more like “them.” And we stopped with the lovely dovey and had a blast!  First, we tried to find some mischief to get into…

mmm, what shall we do next?

How about THIS!

But then, some sad news.  Without those gorgeous blue heels of hers, she wasn’t tall enough for anything but the skyport!

Post production on a wedding is like opening presents for Christmas.  I get so excited to see everything!  For Ligaya & Paulo, it was even more exciting.  I had met her brother first, then again at her college roommate’s wedding, and was honored that she signed with me two years before the big date.  Hee!

A few favorites…okay, a heck of a lot of favorites! Bring ‘em!  So first comes the two e-session shots…

And now the wedding day!  She got ready at her childhood home (which is gorgeous), with her ladies, mom & aunties, and dad.

Lovely Gaya

Lovely Gaya So with Casa Real, you don't need to hire a planner of your own - take advantage of Shannon or Alyssia. But if you have a bigger wedding, or really don't want to have to worry on your day, then GET A PLANNER. To me the planner is pretty much guaranteeing yourself a great time with no stress and everything set up the way you want it. Meet Samar, she was the coordinator that day with Ribbon & Tie. LOVE her! :D I know Shannon at Casa Real did, too! ::grin::

And it's off to the church we go!

The church was the amazing Old Mission San Jose in Fremont.  It’s one of my favorite churches.  I love the juxtaposition of the weathered plank ceiling and the highly ornate altar.

From the church, the bridal party piled into the Hummer limo and off we all went to Pleasanton. Casa Real is one of my top five places in the area to get married. The staff is incredible, the light is lovely, there are gorgeous backdrops everywhere, the rooms are to faint for, and there’s tons of room. And can we talk about the incredible food?! Although one of my favorite DJs, Kevin with Fantasy Sound, insists the kids chicken tenders meal is where it’s at, Alyssia, Andrew and Shannon tend to give us a little sampler of what everyone else is having. Very smart cuz there’s nothing like yummy food to make me shout about it – and them!  YUM!

Speaking of Fantasy Sound, their name’s kind of a misnomer.  They did all the tree leaf gobos and scroll gobos and pinlights and uplights all around the Amber Room during cocktails and the Great Hall during dinner.  Wait until you see the cake…Look what was waiting for everyone in Casa Real's Great Hall!

Side note:  don’t forget about lighting.  I’m not kidding.  It makes a room just come alive both to your guests and for your videographers and photographers.  See the uplights in the back?  Now see what it does for the cake…

No, I’m not talking about me (although is WAS my bday last Monday). But the beautiful Marin, who has been patiently waiting for her engagement session proofs while I process a whole bunch of weddings from last month. So Marin my sister in curly hair, YOU get a special surprise for your birthday. Hee!

Fun in the Trees!

Marin & Ryan came up from LA to see old friends and hang out with me in John D Morgan Park here in Campbell. I think of Marin as being my sister in hair – check out her curls! :D

Rose Garden, at high noon. Am I a total idiot? Even newbie photogs know that you don’t shoot at high noon. Everyone gets icky bags under the eyes since the light is coming smack down from above. But Tiffany and Javier didn’t have much of a choice – with their jobs, it was lunchtime or nuthin’! And honestly, I can’t think of a more fun way to spend lunch than biking around the Rose Garden with my man and having multiple excuses for us to snuggle and kiss. Awww. :D So we found some trees, got creative, and had a blast. Know why I love e-sessions so much? It’s because it’s a great, no-stress, yes-fun way to really get to know how a couple interacts. How does he look at her? Does she giggle or full-on laugh at his jokes? Are they kissy or more reserved? In general, the more active a couple is with each other, the more evocative their images. So if a couple’s more reserved, it’s up to me to work with them in small ways to get a bit of interaction between them.
Their big day is this summer at Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph and the stunning Nestldown. I can’t wait!

Ahh, March! Engagement session time! I love it – I get to shoot gorgeous couples in love and get to know them a bit before the wedding. Yes!

I’m only just starting post production for Christina & Brian but I had to stop everything and post this. Whoo, that girl’s got the fire eyes!

So I dug in a bit more and then, dang, so does Brian!

Today I’m with Holly & Josh at the Hotel Valencia in Santana Row, so in honor of their big day, I thought I’d post two of our faves from our e-session.

Kat and Scott know how to be romantic. They chose an intimate little vineyard in Livermore called Concannon, and met me there with blanket, wine and cheese, picnic basket, and a great sense of adventure! We had a fantastic time and I’m so excited already for their wedding next year.
