The First Glance - never know what might happen!

The First Glance - never know what might happen!

I hear it quite a bit, that little question – do you think we should see each other before the ceremony?

I don’t answer. Instead, I tell them exactly why a First Glance is so special and why it could be a wonderful experience for them. And then I let them decide on their own.

You as the bride are fresh from the stylist, just put on your dress, your feet don’t hurt a bit, and it’s just hit you once you put on that veil that you’re a Bride. Capital B. Nerves are about to get a little ramped up!

Your Groom is freshly pressed and can’t wait to see you. But at the same time, he’s even more nervous than you because, not only will he about to exchange vows, but…what if he cries in front of God and everybody when he sees you walking down the aisle? He doesn’t want everyone to see him cry, just you. And maybe God.

So think about this – what if we find a little out of the way spot with beautiful light, and we fix your dress to look its best and your flowers and veil are framing you beautifully.

And then, we tell your Groom to turn around while we back away and leave the two of you alone for five minutes?

You get a chance to let your emotions go, drink in the moment, see each other at your finest time. And best of all, spend the rest of the day together.

Sure, I could mention that you get to go to your own cocktail hour and sure, I could tell you that not jamming in all your portraits in the 45 minutes you have after the ceremony can be very daunting for you both (not to mention your poor face from smiling constantly during the group photos). But that “spending the rest of the day together” part is, well, wonderful!

So given all that, why should you wait until the ceremony starts? If your religion expects it, or if you have more than an hour between the end of the ceremony and the start of guests being seated, or if it’s something you’ve always dreamed of, then by all means wait. Don’t let anyone talk you out of what you want just to push up the schedule a bit. We work around you and what your wishes are, not force you to do what we think is best.

So there you go, a little something to discuss before schedules are made and photographers are consulted. Whatever you decide will be perfect. Happy holidays!

Heck yes!  Okay, granted, I’m a photographer.  But the more I see, the more convinced I am that lighting is almost as important as those gorgeous floral arrangements you and your designer worked so darned hard on.  And when it comes right down to it (ie brass tacks, mula, etc.), you get more value from lighting design than many of the other things you’ve budgeted.

Even if it’s just uplighting…

How to bring depth and drama to any space

I love Palm Event Center. Love the vines, the barrels, the ambiance, the food. And I love that they love me right back!
I was honored to be part of their preferred vendor showcase, a closed show for brides and grooms scheduled to marry at either the Palm or their sister location, Casa Real. There were three separate areas designed and lit by different teams, specifically to provide inspiration and show off their talents.
The room I was in is the Estate Room, a room ripe for romantic lighting and candles. Fantasy Sound Event Services (lighting design), The Flower House (floral design) and Pleasanton Rentals (tables, linens, tablewear, drapes, etc.) worked together to create a beautiful ceremony site, with gauzy drapes that allowed the barrels to peek through without being too noticable. The “gobo” lighting pattern on the draping and floor really takes your breath away! Jinger from the Flower House also showcased flowers for two tablescapes, with beautiful linens and more from Pleasanton Rentals. Also with me in the room were Jen’s Cakes (have you had their red velvet cake? YUM!), Monina Wright Beauty for styling, and from the kitchen at Palm Event Center, a yummy Kobe Beef slider station, with chips and shakes. It’s a great way to have late night snacks during the dancing.

For the first time, we hit the RECORD button on our Canon 5D Mark II cameras.  I knew for Sherrie & Andrew, the first glance was a huge moment for them.  They had Amos Productions as their videography team so I knew they’d have the moment preserved on video, and I’m not a videographer and have no intention of bringing it into any of our offerings.  But…I did want a little sumpin’ special in the slideshow I was making for them as a surprise.  5 seconds, no more.   See if you can spot it!

It was 2003 and I was still getting up to speed with my new business.  A couple asked if I would do something that most photographers back then would consider unthinkable – would I shoot their wedding and hand over the film?  It was years before “shoot & burn” became a reality, when clients asked for their negatives or digital files.  It just wasn’t done!

But it was the end of October and at one of my favorite places, the Lodge at Pebble Beach.  All of six people were there to witness it – myself included!  And I just LOVED Tiffany’s sweet demeanor and Jaan’s fantastic sense of humor.  So I said yes!  I think I shot four rolls of film, maybe five, over those two hours and handed them off.  As I left, I was certain I’d never see them again.

Gosh how I love Facebook!  I reconnected with them, seven years later.  She’s still beautiful and sweet and he’s still handsome and charming – and few days ago they came to say hi! They hadn’t had a portrait done in a while so I broke out the camera and did a few cute shots.  Wanna see?

Of note: both of these two are ridiculously talented, creative and intelligent.  Jaan’s ventures in “slim down your biz focus and take it online” spawned Noded, a new way for freelancers to work together and businesses to use the internet to their advantage.  And Tiffany’s blog FromSthlm focuses on independent Swedish designers, making amazing design accessible here in the States.  Both excellent reads!

Seven years and still crazy about each other!

Jefferson Street Mansion - bridal room

That dress! That room!

I’m a’wash in wedding post production! So much fun – I swear, each wedding, each image I open is like my birthday. Yes!

The one I’m working on now is for my couple Amanda & Chris, who live 3000 miles away. Her mom is a longtime Benicia resident (Benicia is located in the North Bay, north of Berkeley) remembered watching as the Jefferson Street Mansion was restored to full glory.  It’s grand in a quirky sort of way, with little bits of laugh like full oil paintings of dog generals, sets of china adorned with fish, sculptures of monkeys in clown costumes, and Scarlett O’Hara draperies everywhere, with tassels as big as my camera.  I fell in love with it pretty darn quick!

The bridal room, however, was the most Scarlett with the least amount of quirk.  Jutting out from a corner is an elaborate carved four poster bed with lush draperies in all kinds of fabrics.  It was a tactile person’s dream.

Here’s a bit of a peek!

As promised! :D
Here’s Kat & Scott’s romantic candlelit ceremony – in an earlier post, I remembered I hadn’t made a slideshow for them because it was so close to my Christmas break.
I’m trying a new slideshow creator, not sure if I like it as much as my trusty one I’ve been using for a few years now. What do y’all think?

Just found out that this issue of Brides Northern California, both online and on paper, is my new BFF. Can you have a paper BFF?!

First, my couple Jessica & Kevin were featured in a shot of one of my fave places to have an engagement session, downtown San Jose:

Then, my gorgeous butterfly bride Tiffany became a fashion icon with the feature in Aisle Say, a very cool blog with little tips and finds that I think should be on every bride’s RFF. Hey, that’s it! A BFF RFF! Oh, be careful, my geek is showing. :/

You might remember Tiffany from this shot from her wedding to Javier in Nestldown:

Kerry is a goddess.  Well, she is to me.  She’s the one that introduced me in a roundabout way to Erin & Dom.  That was after she told her brother about me, who was marrying Erin’s sister, and after she was in Molly & Robert’s wedding…  I’m hoping someday Kerry will hire me, too!

So I realized after I finished Erin & Dom’s post production that I had a bit of time to make them a surprise slideshow.  They’re all the way in Dallas now so it’s not like they can come here and see anything on our big screen, right? Then I thought – oh man, did i make a slideshow for her sister Kat and hubby Scott?!  I was racing to get the post done before Christmas, and it was just before we headed to the east coast for two weeks…I bet I didn’t!  Arg!

So I’m posting a surprise slideshow for the gorgeous Erin and her handsome Dom.  And then, I’ll be making and posting one for the equally gorgeous Kat and her also very handsome Scott.  :D But what can I post for Kerry?  Hmmmm…
